Spartans 2nd At Husky Invitational After 18

Sammamish, Wash.----- Staying out of too much trouble powered San Jose State University's second-place start in the Husky Invitational men's golf tournament when play was suspended due to darkness.

In their second tournament of the season, the Spartans posted a first-round five-player team score of 370 on the par 71, 6,911-yard Aldama Golf Club course. Only host Washington, at 366 was better in the six-player, count-five scoring format. Boise State at 372, Nevada at 373, and Long Beach State at 379 round out the top-five teams.

Nevada's Joey Vrzich was the first-round leader and the only player to break par with a two-under par 69. San Jose State's Sean Yu and Ben Campbell were the top Spartans for the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament with a one-over par 72. Yu was one of the steadier players on the course that experienced a two-hour fog delay. Campbell only had pars on seven holes, led the team in round one with six birdies for his 72.

San Jose State also counted the scores of freshman Parker Sisk's 74 and Matt Heitel and Kevin Velo's 76. Bryce Wortman's 78 that consisted of the team's only eagle of the day, two birdies, and just five pars was not used in the team scoring format.

Due to fog, second-round play was delayed approximately two hours, and was suspended at dusk due to darkness. Most teams have about six holes per player to finish round two starting at 8:00 a.m. The final 18 holes will begin immediately after the second round is over.
