Rios Penalty Kick Leads Spartans To 2-2 Tie With Houston Baptist

Houston, Texas -- San Jose State defender Andy Rios scored on a penalty kick in the 77th minute for the final goal in a 2-2 tie with Houston Baptist in a Western Athletic Conference men's soccer match.

The Spartans (3-4-2, 1-0-1 WAC) opened the scoring with a goal from Kalei Tolentino-Perry in the 17th minute of the game. They held the Huskies (3-2-3, 1-0-1 WAC) scoreless until the 11th minute of the second half when Thomas Menke knocked in a goal from close range.

Rios' goal was his first of the season for the Spartans. His goal came 29 seconds after Houston Baptist took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Dominick Faletto.

"We played very well, but should have put them away with a second goal in the first half. In the end, a point on the road is good," said San Jose State men's soccer head coach Simon Tobin.

Spartan goalkeeper Alex Clewis was credited with four saves.

San Jose State returns to action, Sunday, September 30, in a Western Athletic Conference match against the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
