Moraga, Calif.----- San Jose State University became the first team to score a goal against the Saint Mary's College men's soccer team this season, but the Spartans lost to the Gaels, 5-1, in a non-conference match.
Spartan sophomore Danny Sanchez found the Gaels' goal at 84:00 for his first score of the season to close out the scoring in the contest.
Saint Mary's (4-0) took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a successful Stephen Dougherty penalty kick past Spartan goalkeeper Alex Clewis at 26:04.
The Gaels also got second-half goals from Valentin Spooner, Anders Engebretsen, Jake Rudel and Javier Rivera-Hernandez before Sanchez scored for the Spartans (1-3-1). Engebretsen, Saint Mary's leading scorer, recorded his fifth goal of the season at the 64:45 mark to put his team ahead, 3-0.
San Jose State goalkeeper Alex Clewis was credited with five saves. Saint Mary's goalkeeper Remi Prieur stopped six of the Spartans' seven shots on goal. The Gaels outshot San Jose State, 17-11.
The Spartans are back in action, Monday, September 10, hosting the University of San Francisco in a 6:30 p.m. non-conference contest at the Spartan Soccer Complex. San Jose State students are admitted free with a valid Tower ID card.
