Volleyball Sweeps Way To Two Wins Friday

Greeley, Colo.—The San José State volleyball team recorded a pair of 3-0 wins Friday at the Hampton Inn & Suites Northern Colorado Classic.

The Spartans started the tournament with a win over host Northern Colorado, 28-25, 25-19, 25-20. Fernanda Vido led the team with 15 kills and had her first double-double of the season with 10 digs.

Luiza Andrade led the team with 16 digs and two service aces, while Caitlin Bettenay had a season-high 11 digs. Thaliana Grajeda led the team in blocks with three.
 
The match against the Bears could call the "match of streaks." The first set featured at least five runs by the respective teams. Northern Colorado jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Spartans came back to take a 5-4 lead. The Bears then led 10-7 and 15-11 before SJSU used a 5-1 lead to tie the set at 16-16.
 
The two teams then battled back and forth, with the Spartans finally winning on the third SJSU set point at 28-26, on Bettenay's only service ace of the match.
 
The final two sets saw the Spartans lead the entire second set and take the lead for good in the third set at 5-4 on a Bettenay kill.
 
In the second match of the day, San José State swept Alabama State, 25-15, 25-14, 25-17. The team hit .301 for the match including .591 from Bettenay who led the team with 13 kills on 22 attempts and no errors.  Setter Mamie Garard had a season-best three service aces to go with 16 assists.
 
Andrade again led the team defensively with 13 digs, while Grajeda recorded two block assists.
 
San José State led from start to finish in sets one and two. Alabama State followed the tendencies of the day in the third set by streaking out to a 7-2 lead. The Spartans then used a streak of their own to tie the match at 8-8, and take the lead for good at 9-8 on a Lady Hornet hitting error. Whitney Barnes scored the final Spartan point of the match to give the team a 25-17 win and second sweep of the day.
 
SJSU is now 3-2 on the season and plays the final match of the tournament Saturday morning against Pacific at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT.
