Saratoga, Calif.----- Neal Arnett scored twice for San Jose State, but it was seven first-quarter goals by #11-UC Davis that led the Aggies to 16-8 victory over the Spartans in the season-opening men's water polo match for both teams.
Ido Goldschmidt scored three times to lead all players including the first two goals of the match for UC Davis (1-0).
Marc Weber, Ashley Castle, Justin Pickering, Niels Hofmeijer, Adam Bado and Giovanni Lovatelli joined Arnett in the scoring column for #15-ranked San Jose State (0-1).
"We showed our youth, especially in the first quarter and it was hard to get it back, but it was a good introduction to (NCAA) Division I for the team," said San Jose State head coach Bruce Watson.
Spartan goalkeeper Todd Palmer was credited with 13 saves. UC Davis starting goalkeeper R.J. Quigley had six saves in the first half. Jonah Arrington finished out the match in goal for the Aggies, allowed three goals and was not credited with a save.
San Jose State returns to action next weekend playing Chapman and Cal Poly Pomona on September 15 and George Washington and Fresno Pacific on September 16 in the Aggie RoundUp at UC Davis.
