Mathews’ Late Goal Lifts Spartans To 1-0 Win Over UC Davis

SAN JOSE, Calif. – It took 108 minutes, but SJSU women's soccer was finally able to take care of business at home against UC Davis as Hannah Mathews netted her first-career goal to lift the Spartans to a 1-0 victory over the Aggies for their first win of the season.

"Coming into overtime, we all looked at each other and knew that we were going to get (a goal), and it was either going to be me or Kristen Amarikwa, we just knew it," Mathews said. I just timed my run and I saw that Natasha Harris was going to send it back in. I was kind of just off to the side and I didn't really think about – I just put my foot on it and it went in.

"It's such a great feeling because we've worked so hard for this. This is the turnaround for our team now. We are ready and we are going to start working again."

Mathews' goal came in the 108th minute of the second OT period and was the fifth Spartan shot of the period. After several unsuccessful attempts from short range, SJSU (1-3-2) gathered a cleared ball and collected themselves for the winning play. Harris, a sophomore from Mountain View, Calif., sent the ball back into the box on a well-struck pass that found enough of Mathew's foot to shoot past the Aggies' goalkeeper and end the match.

SJSU dominated possession from start to finish, outshooting the Aggies (3-4-1) 16-4 and tallied 12 corner kicks to UC Davis' two. The Spartans' defense was lights-out on all fronts as just two of Davis' shots were on-goal and were easily corralled by Paige Simoneau, who picked up her second shutout of the season.

The win not only gave SJSU their first of the season, but also bucked the trend of being unable to capitalize in overtime as three of the previous five games went into extra time.

With the win, the Spartans will look to carry their momentum on the road as they travel to Riverside, Calif. for their final nonconference bout of the season against UC Riverside on Friday, September 14.
