Spartans fall to UMKC, 1-0 in Men’s Soccer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a defensive battle, San Jose State University lost to Kansas City, 1-0, to conclude their first two-match Western Athletic Conference (WAC) road trip of the season.

In the 13th minute, UMKC senior Lorant Lettner lobbed the ball to the inside post for the match's only goal. The assist was credited to Tim Staerz.

The Spartans (3-5-2, 1-1-1 WAC) held strong defensively for the rest of the match, but could not find the back of the net. Sophomore Nicolas Brenes led the Spartans with two shots.

"We dominated the game, but gave an early goal away. UMKC defended well and we couldn't break them down," said San Jose State head coach Simon Tobin.

Spartan goalkeeper Rodrigo Reyes-Zavalza was credited with two saves in his first match of the season.

The Spartans, who tied Houston Baptist, 2-2, two days earlier for a point in the standings, return home on Friday, October 5, in a WAC match-up against Grand Canyon University at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
