SAN JOSE, Calif. – San José State women's soccer suffered just their second loss in Mountain West play on Sunday, falling to Wyoming 3-2 in overtime at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
Tied at 2-2 just three minutes into overtime, the Spartans were called for a foul inside the box, giving the Cowgirls a penalty kick. The kick was taken by Annika Clayton, who was able to get the shot past SJSU's Paige Simoneau for the game-winner.
The Spartans struck first in the opening period as Kristen Amarikwa scored first goal of the season off a corner kick in the 19th minute. Gabriella Hurtado made the assist. Just minutes later, the Cowgirls equalized as Savannah Warner scored from the right side of the box to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second period, Jamilecxth Becerra gave the Spartans the lead again as she scored a beautiful unassisted goal from 25 yards out. Becerra took the ball off a throw in and juked defenders before sending a rocket from the left side of the pitch that sailed over Wyoming's goalkeeper to the right top corner of the net.
Uncharacteristic of the Spartans defense, SJSU was unable to crack down defensively and allowed another goal in the 62nd minute to tie the game at 2-2. It is just the third match of the season that the Spartans have allowed multiple goals, and the first allowing three goals. SJSU got a couple chances late in regulation and had a corner kick in the waning moments, but the ball was cleared away before any damage was done.
With the loss, SJSU falls to 6-2-0 in conference play and sits at 7-6-2 overall. The Spartans will have three more opportunities to climb back up the conference standings beginning next weekend at Utah State on Friday at Boise State on Sunday.
