Spartans To Face Fresno State In Final Regular Season Match

 SAN JOSE, Calif. – San José State has one final regular-season match on the 2018 schedule prior to hosting the 2019 Mountain West Tournament, and it is an important one. The Spartans will hit the road for Fresno for a battle with the fifth-place Bulldogs on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT and live stats and streaming will be available through the Mountain West Network.

LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans faced Utah State and Boise State in a pair of tough road contests that ended in 0-0 draws. Paige Simoneau picked up shutout Nos. 8 and 9 on the season, extending her single-season school record for shutouts.

MEET THE OPPONENT – FRESNO STATE
The Bulldogs carry a three-game win streak into Friday's match with 2-1 victories over Colorado State and Boise State and a 1-0 shutout at Utah State in their last outing. Fresno State sits at 6-9-3 overall and 5-3-2 in Mountain West play where they are in fifth place in the standings. The Bulldogs are led by Brian Zwaschka in his ninth season at the helm.  

SERIES HISTORY – FRESNO STATE
Fresno State leads the overall series at 15-9-2, however the Spartans won last season's match in a 1-0 shutout on senior day. Lauola Amanoni scored her first-career goal in the 81st minute to lift the Spartans to victory.

DEFENSE MAKING HISTORY
Paige Simoneau and the Spartan Defense has been outstanding all season long. SJSU leads the Mountain West in goals against average and ranks 34th nationally at 0.66. The Spartans have allowed just five goals in conference play for an average of 0.48 while tallying a total of seven shutouts in Mountain West play, tied for the most in conference play in Mountain West history with San Diego State (2013) and Utah (2006).

IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST STANDINGS
With 20 points, SJSU has already clinched a spot in the Mountain West Tournament, which they will host Oct. 30 – Nov. 3 at the Spartan Soccer Complex, however there is still time to lock up a first-round bye. The Spartans currently sit in a three-way tie for second. The top two teams in the final standings will receive a bye for the first round.

Senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau has been phenomenal in the goal this season as she continues to set new school records each week. Simoneau currently has the most shutouts in a single season with nine and holds the career shutouts record as well with 19. Seven of her shutouts this year have come in conference play, which is the most in Mountain West history. Simoneau bested former teammate and current goalkeepers coach Zoe Makrigiannis for each record. Her goals against average, 0.65, is also the best in single-season school history.
