Boise, Idaho—Junior Caitlin Bettenay recorded her second double-double of the week as the San José State volleyball team won its second road Mountain West match of the week with a 3-0 sweep at Boise State Saturday afternoon.
Bettenay led all hitters with 10 kills for the match and added 11 digs, her fourth double-double of the season. She hit .261 for the match and added two blocks in the win.
San José State won its third consecutive road match dating back to a 3-2 win at Air Force on October 11, followed by Thursday's 3-1 win at Utah State. The Spartans have won five of the team's past six matches, the only loss to MW leader Fresno State on October 20.
"Our focus this week was learning to win on the road," said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson. "I am proud of our team for ignoring the fatigue and distractions of travel and putting together some good volleyball. Our focus will be to keep improving our team systems and chemistry with each throughout the rest of the season."
The Spartans got out to early leads in each set. SJSU led the first set by as many as six twice including 18-12. Boise State used a 9-4 run to get to within a point at 22-21 before SJSU scored three of the final five points for a 25-23 win.
San José State scored the first four points of the second set with Bettenay serving and did not look back in the 25-20 win. The third set carried the familiar theme of getting ahead early, and SJSU won the set 25-20.
Other contributing in the win included Ryann Thomison who led the team with a career-best eight blocks, one solo and seven assists. Latahevai Lousi and Haylee Nelson each had nine kills, while Lousi added four blocks. Luiza Andrade had a team-best 15 digs. Kaitlynn Zdroik recorded 21 assists, while Mamie Garard added 19 assists.
San José State improves to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the MW. The Spartans come home with their two-match winning streak to host New Mexico on Thursday at 6 p.m., and UNLV next Saturday at 2 p.m. All matches are played inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
