Spartans Make It Two Straight, 3-1 Over Incarnate Word

San Jose, Calif.----- Second-half goals by Max Allen and Andy Rios propelled San Jose State University to a 3-1 victory over University of Incarnate Word in a Western Athletic Conference men's soccer match.

Allen's game winner was an unassisted goal from 40 yards away at the 64:41 mark. His first goal of the season came just over two minutes after Incarnate Word (2-12-1, 2-7) was forced to play a player short after Johnathan Diaz picked up his second yellow card of the match.

"He's got a good left foot and they gave him too much space and time," said San Jose State head coach Simon Tobin about Allen's first goal in his nearly two seasons as a Spartan.

Rios added a clinching goal for San Jose State (7-7-2, 5-3-1 WAC) on a penalty kick at 88:09.

Spartan goalkeeper Alex Clewis was credited with three saves. Incarnate Word goalkeeper Carlos Mercado made two saves.

San Jose State, now with a two-match winning streak, found itself trailing early after Maurits Gersen took a pass from Kas VanEekelen and scored at 4:35. Nicolas Brenes evened the score for the Spartans at 26:42 from an assist by Omar Lemus.

San Jose State concludes the weekend of conference action hosting Texas Rio Grande Valley, at the Spartan Soccer Complex, Sunday, October 28, at 1:00 p.m.
