Spartans To Face Fresno State in First Round of Mountain West Tournament

 SAN JOSE, Calif. – San José State will face rival Fresno State in the opening round of the 2018 Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship in a rematch of both team's regular-season finale which ended in a scoreless draw. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT from the Spartans Soccer Complex. The winner will face No. 1 seed Boise State in Thursday's semifinal round.

LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans and Bulldogs played to a thrilling scoreless draw in Fresno on Friday night. Paige Simoneau and the defense picked up their eighth shutout in league play on the season, breaking the Mountain West record for conference shutouts. Simoneau also extended her regular-season school record to 10.
 
MEET THE OPPONENT – FRESNO STATE
The Bulldogs enter the match at 6-9-4 overall and 5-3-3 in Mountain West play and are led by Brian Zwaschka in his ninth season at the helm.

With Friday's tie, the overall series now sits at 15-9-3 in Fresno State's favor.  

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
San José State is hosting the Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship for the first time in school history thanks to the Spartans outstanding 2017 campaign in which they won the regular season title with a 9-1-1 record.

SJSU IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS
This is the fourth-straight season which SJSU has made the Mountain West Championships. The Spartans won the Championship in 2015, giving the school their first Mountain West title in any sport since joining the conference in 2013. Last season, SJSU was the No. 1 seed entering the tournament, but was knocked out by New Mexico as they fell to the Lobos in penalty kicks.
  
 DEFENSE MAKING HISTORY
Paige Simoneau and the Spartan Defense has been outstanding all season long. SJSU leads the Mountain West in goals against average and ranks 32nd nationally at 0.62. The Spartans have allowed just five goals in conference play for an average of 0.43 while tallying a total of eight shutouts in Mountain West play, the most in conference play in Mountain West history.

MS. STEAL YOUR RECORD
Senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau has been phenomenal in the goal this season as she continues to set new school records each week. Simoneau currently has the most shutouts in a single season with 10 and holds the career shutouts record as well with 20. Eight of her shutouts this year have come in conference play, which is the most in Mountain West history. Simoneau beat out former teammate and current goalkeepers coach Zoe Makrigiannis for each record. Her goals against average, 0.61, is also the best in single-season school history.
