Paige Simoneau Named Mountain West Defensive POTW

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San José State women's soccer senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau put an exclamation point on her sensation regular season by earning Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors for her shutout performance vs. Fresno State, the league office announced Monday.

"Paige deserves this recognition from the conference for her amazing efforts in goal," head coach Lauren Hanson said. "To get three shutouts in a row and break a conference shutout record is quite an accomplishment. We are thrilled to have such a special player on our team."

Simoneau didn't have to do much in the net vs. the Bulldogs thanks to outstanding play from her defensive back line in front of the goal. The Spartans defense allowed a season-low four shots total and just one on goal, which Simoneau saved. It was the team's third-straight shutout and eighth overall in league play, the most in Mountain West history for a single season.

For Simoneau, the shutout was No. 10 on the season and No. 20 for her career. Both are the best marks in school history. Her eight shutouts in conference play are also a Mountain West single-season record.

The Corona, California product lowered her goals against average to 0.61 overall, the lowest in school history, and 0.43 in conference play. Both marks lead the Mountain West.

This is the second player of the week award for Simoneau this season and fourth of her career. She previously took home the honors following her first shutout of 2018 against Kansas State.

Simoneau and the Spartans will look to keep the shutouts rolling as they kick off play in the Mountain West Championship Tournament on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. PT in a rematch with Fresno State.
