Spartans Fall to UTRGV, 2-1

San Jose, Calif. – UTRGV jumped on the scoreboard early to defeat San Jose State, 2-1, in a Western Athletic Conference men's soccer match.

In just the second minute, the Vaqueros leading scorer, Kyle Edwards fired a shot to the right side of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, senior Rooby Dalusma chipped the ball over two Spartan defenders finding William Akio, whose shot went past Spartan goalkeeper, Alex Clewis giving UTRGV a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans goal came from an own goal by the Vaqueros in the 13th minute of the match.

"We spotted them two goals in the first eight minutes. With a team like UTRGV, who are quite good, you are asking a lot of yourself to overcome that deficit. It's almost an impossible task because they like to keep everybody pretty deep and defend," said head coach Simon Tobin.

Spartans (7-8-2, 5-4-1 WAC) outshot UTRGV (12-5, 7-3 WAC), 16 to 11.

Clewis was credited with seven saves. UTRGV goalkeeper finished with two saves.

The Spartans face Seattle University in their last home match on Friday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
