Women’s Hoops Cruises To 94-63 Victory

San Jose, Calif. – Five Spartans scored in double figures led by freshman Raziya Potter's 14 points, and the San Jose State women's basketball team defeated the Chico State Wildcats 94-63 in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon in The Event Center.

"We had moments where we looked really good and moments where we made mistakes and will have to clean things up," head coach Jamie Craighead said.  "For the most part everyone performed the way they have been practicing, which is always a good sign.  Overall, I was proud of the effort, but we need to be consistent for 40 minutes."

In addition to Potter, Danae Marquez scored 13 points. Fieme'a Hafoka added 12 and both Megan Anderson and Cydni Lewis finished with 11.

The Wildcats never threatened the Spartans.  San Jose State led 28-19 after the first 10 minutes and took a 56-30 advantage into the locker room at halftime. They built the lead on pressure defense and up-tempo offense and after three quarters extended the margin to 31 points, 74-43.

Analyss Benally, who hit 60 threes last season setting the program's sophomore three-point record, made three in the game and finished with nine points.  Anderson also made three from beyond the arc.  She set the program's freshman record last season with 44, and her trey with 23 seconds to play gave the Spartans the final margin of victory at 94-63.

"Among our freshman, who people haven't seen yet, Raziya showed glimpses of what she is capable of," Craighead said. "Nefer León, who has been out six weeks and has practiced just three times, performed as I expected, but you also saw glimpses of what she can do."

León finished the game with five points and Andrea Kohlhaas, who was injured last season and played on five games, had six points on a pair of threes.  Alexis Harris added two points, Mikaylah Wilson had four and Courtesy Clark contributed seven.

The Spartans regular season begins on November 6 in The Event Center against San Francisco State.  Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
