Albuquerque, N.M.—For the second consecutive match, Latahevai Lousi led the Spartan volleyball team in kills as San José State lost at New Mexico 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-22) Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West match.
Lousi recorded 11 kills to lead SJSU. She had 34 swings during the match and added five digs, one ace and one block in her three sets played.
Senior Giulia Gávio returned to the floor for the first time this season after suffering a knee injury during the 2017 season. She finished second on the team in kills with seven and also had five digs.
Mamie Garard had 26 assists and eight digs for SJSU, while Luiza Andrade recorded a team-best 16 digs and had three assists and an a service ace.
After losing the first set 25-12, the Spartans fought back in the second set, taking a lead at 10-9 and leading by as many as three at 13-10. The Lobos used a 5-1 run to take the lead back at 15-14, and the Spartans took their final lead at 16-15. UNM won the set 25-19.
The Spartans again fought back from an early deficit in the third set to take leads of 8-7, 9-8 and 11-10. SJSU tied the match at 13-13, but UNM took the lead for good and won the set 25-22.
San José State is now 6-9 on the season and 1-5 in the MW. The team returns home on Tuesday, October 9, to face Nevada at 6 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Tickets are available at the door.
