Penner Puts Spartans In Win Column WIth 2nd Half Game Winner

San Jose, Calif. ----- San José State University senior Zach Penner netted his first goal of the season to give the Spartans a 1-0 win over Grand Canyon University in a Western Athletic Conference men's soccer match.

In the 83rd minute of a scoreless tie, Penner took a pass from Jonathan Partida and beat Grand Canyon goalkeeper George Tasouris with a left-footed shot that finished in the low corner of the net.

"To do well in the WAC, you have to take care of your home games. Grand Canyon is a very good team. They have some big wins this year," said Spartans head coach Simon Tobin. "I thought we dominated the game, but again, I have said that for about 90 percent of our games. You have to put teams away."

Defensively, San Jose State (4-5-2, 2-1-1 WAC) limited the Antelopes (6-7-0, 2-2-0 WAC) to only eight shots. Spartan goalkeeper Alex Clewis was credited with one save.

San Jose State finished with 14 shots. Miguel Castillo and Omar Lemus led the Spartans with three shots each.

The Spartans are back home Sunday, October 7, to face the UNLV Rebels at 1:00 p.m.
