RENO, Nev. – SJSU women's soccer netted two second half goals to complete the comeback and defeat Nevada 2-1 Friday night.
The Spartans trailed 1-0 at the start of the second half, but got a golden opportunity to tie the match when the Wolfpack were charged with a yellow card setting up a free kick in the 55th minute. Karlee Pottorff took the kick and made the best of the chance to tie the game at 1-1. It was Pottorff's first career goal.
"Our team played a hard-fought match in a challenging place to play," head coach Lauren Hanson said. "To get a win on the road coming back from a 1-0 deficit showed our team's true character. Karlee had an amazing free kick for first career goal."
Just six minutes later the Spartans struck once again to take the 2-1 lead as Haleigh Wynne netted her first-career goal off the assist from Gabriella Hurtado.
"To have Haleigh score her first career goal as the game winner was a special moment for our team," Hanson said. "It was a great team effort tonight and our staff is proud of them."
The pair of goals makes this the first game of 2018 that the Spartans have netted multiple goals. With the win, SJSU improves to 4-1-0 in Mountain West play and 5-5-2 overall.
The Spartans defense once again took care of business as senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau made a pair of saves in five shots faced. SJSU out-shot Nevada nine to five with three on-goal. The Spartans also had three corner kicks and allowed none.
SJSU will now turn their attention to UNLV where they will face the Rebels on Sunday in Las Vegas. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.
