Moraga, Calif.----- In her second tournament for San Jose State University, freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo won a pair of three-set matches on the final day to claim one of three singles championships at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational.
Pedrero Galindo defeated University of San Francisco's Rita Colyer, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, for her first championship at the college level. Earlier in the day at the Korth Tennis Complex on the Saint Mary's College campus, the freshman from Murica, Spain outlasted Jamie Schoer of Santa Clara, 7-5, 0-6, 6-4. The Spartan newcomer now is 3-1 in three-set singles matches with wins her last three three-set efforts.
"It was an amazing job by Alba to win her first collegiate tournament. At the end of the day, her consistency and determination were amazing," said San Jose State women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka. "In her semifinal round match, she was down, 4-1, and came back to win the next five games and won the match."
Pedrero Galindo was one of two San Jose State winners at Saint Mary's. Kristina Baran, a freshman from Angers, France, captured a pair of straight set singles matches to win one of the three consolation singles brackets. Her final victory was a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Hannah Ketcherside, the second University of the Pacific player she defeated during the weekend.
Freshman Mathilda Vidgren also had a strong showing winning two championship singles bracket matches before losing in a quarterfinal round.
San Jose State is next in action at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Stanford, October 18 through October 22.
