Corte Madera, Calif.----- San Jose State University took advantage of what the Meadow Club golf course had to offer and posted one of its best 36-hole team totals in relation to par with a 21-under 547 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational men's golf tournament.
The Spartans are in third place in the 15-team field. Host California is the leader at 532. Pepperdine is second at 538. Arizona State at 553 and USF and UC Davis at 555 round out the top six teams heading into the final 18 holes on October 9.
As a team, San Jose State racked up 44 birdies and five eagles on the par 71, 6,734-yard course. The Spartans were the second best scoring team on the four par-3 holes at five-under par and third on the par-5 holes at 15-under.
Sean Yu and Bryce Wortman are the top two San Jose State players after 36 holes with six-under par 136 scores to land in a five-way tie for eighth place. Wortman was on fire in the morning round with a 66 that consisted of two eagles and five birdies.
Transfer Matt Heitel continued his strong early-season showing with scores of 69 and 68 and is tied for 13th place at 137. Kevin Velo is tied for 25th at 140 and Ben Campbell is tied for 38th at 143. Nate Jetter is playing as an individual entry and is 74th at 149.
Cal's Colin Morikawa, one of the world's top amateur players, is the tournament leader at 13-under 129.
