Second Quarter Drought Dooms Spartans at USF

San Francisco, Calif. – The San Jose State women's basketball team managed just four points in the second quarter which led to an 85-63 loss at San Francisco on Friday night.

The four points are the program's lowest output in a quarter since the NCAA went away from 20 minute halves and started playing four quarters three season ago.

"Nothing worked for us and nothing went our way in that second period," head coach Jamie Craighead said.  "I was happy with the way we came out in the second half.  We competed and played better.  We were much more aggressive on both ends."

SJSU (0-2) hit four threes in the first 10 minutes including two from Megan Anderson, one each from Nefer León and Andrea Kohlhaas and the score was 16-14 San Francisco after 10 minutes.

In the second period the team got a field goal and a pair of free throws from Cydni Lewis, but that was it.  USF (1-0) put up 18 points and took a 34-18 lead into the half.

In the second half the Spartans came out firing.  Analyss Benally scored 11 of her team-high 14 points and Raziya Potter had four of her season-high 11 in the third period, but San José State was trading buckets with the Dons and could never get the deficit down to single digits. Each team scored 29 in the quarter and the score was 63-47 after 30 minutes.

In the fourth USF pushed its advantage over 20 points and cruised to an 85-63 win.

Lewis, along with Benally and Potter, was the third Spartan in double figures finishing with 10 points.  Anderson added nine and Fieme'a Hafoka had six.

The Spartans are back in action on Sunday at Portland State.  Tip off between the Spartans and Vikings is set for 2:00 p.m.
