Sacramento, Calif. – Behind the efforts of its top-three runners, the SanJose State women's cross country team finished in ninth place at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships at Sacramento's Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
The big three include junior Jennifer Sandoval, sophomore Kai Bohannon and senior Jeanette Zambrano who finished in 30th, 38th and 48th place among the more than 250 runners who competed in the championship.
Sandoval ran a 20:33.60, her fastest time in the three Regional Championships she has competed in. Bohannon topped the clock in 20:45.72. It was her fastest time for six kilometers this season.
"I thought we ran about as good as we could have on this day," head coach Brad Wick said. "Up and down our lineup we were tough and solid which is what you need in a rise like this. I thought Jeanette was outstanding and probably ran the best race of her career. She really capitalized on the day."
Zambrano, a senior, clocked a 20:57.76. It is her fastest time this year and the fastest she has run in a Regional Championship meet in her career.
The fourth Spartan across the finish line was freshman Evelin Meza in a time of 21:23.4 and in 78th place. It was her quickest time of the season.
Senior Adilene Aldapa was the last Spartan to score for the team. She was 89th in a time of 21:28.1.
Savanna Perez was 90th in 21:28.3 and Camilla Hanson was 131st in 21:59.3
"We slotted right in where we have been regionally ranked all year," Wick said. "I think our future is very bright for this team. With the one-two punch of Jenny and Kai and Evelin stepping up and Savanna back next year as well, we are poised for even bigger things in the future."
Boise State's Allie Ostrander led from the opening gun and won the race in 19:09.0. Jessica Hull and Susan Ejore, running for Oregon, finished in second and third place, respectively. Hull ran a 19:22.5 and Ejore a 19.24.6.
In the team competition, Oregon was the winner with 44 points. Boise State (49 pts.), Stanford (95 pts.), Washington (118 pts.) and Portland (144 pts.) rounded out the top-5.
