LOS ANGELES, Calif. – San José State women's soccer's outstanding season came to an end Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium as the Spartans fell to No. 4 UCLA 5-0 in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament.
UCLA jumped out to an early advantage as they showed off their prolific offense that ranks among the best in the nation. The Bruins struck first in the 13th minute off a cross as Jessie Fleming headed it in from inside the box. Five minutes later, they scored again off the foot of Ashley Sanchez as she fielded a pass and tucked a shot past a diving Paige Simoneau from the left corner of the box.
UCLA (15-3-1) then scored twice in a span of 1:15 off the feet of Viviana Villacorta and Sanchez, her second of the game, with 31:38 to play to take a 4-0 lead that they carried into the half.
The Spartans finished with just two shot attempts to the Bruins' 24. The five goals conceded were the most the stout SJSU Defense allowed all season, however Simoneau still tallied a season-high nine saves to limit the damage.
With the loss, the Mountain West Champions finish the season 9-7-6.
