San Jose, Calif.—The San José State volleyball team sent the senior class out on a high note Saturday afternoon as the Spartan swept Air Force 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.
This was final home match for seniors Giulia Gávio and Luiza Andrade, and both made significant contributions in the win. Gávio had a team-best 11 kills and hit .389 (11-4-18) for the match. She also recorded the final kill of the match to give the Spartans the sweep.
Andrade led all players with 20 digs, her ninth match this season with 20 or more digs. She now has 1,599 career digs and is 10th all-time on the MW list and second on the San José State list. Andrade has 444 digs on the season (with two matches to go) and is fifth on the SJSU single-season list. She added eight assists and a service ace for the win.
Latahevai Lousi and Gávio each recorded 11 kills to lead the Spartans. The team hit .312 for the match with 45 kills on 109 attempts and only 11 errors. Three Spartans had six kills in the match – Ryann Thomison, Caitlin Bettenay and Haylee Nelson.
The Spartans and Falcons battled all three sets as there were 23 tie scores and eight lead changes for the match. The first set featured 10 ties and four lead changes, the last coming in the Spartans favor at 19-18 on a Nelson kill. SJSU won the set 25-22 on a Falcon service error. San José State led the second set from first serve. Gávio had the set-winner for the 25-19 win.
The third set featured four lead changes and 11 tied scores. The Falcons held the lead for much of the middle part of the set before SJSU used a 6-3 run to take a 20-19 lead. The Spartans went on to win the set 25-20 on Gávio's match-winning kill.
San José State improves to 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the MW. The team plays the final two matches of the 2018 season next week at Fresno State on Thursday at 7 p.m., and at San Diego State next Saturday at 6 p.m.
