San Jose, Calif.----- Little went right for San Jose State University in its Mountain West-Missouri Valley Conference Challenge men's basketball game against Indiana State University.
The Spartans had their poorest night of the season losing to the Sycamores, 86-57.
Forward Michael Steadman, guard Brae Ivey and center Oumar Barry scored in double figures for San Jose State with 13, 12, and 11 points, respectively, but the Spartans needed more on both ends of the floor.
San Jose State (1-6) converted just 30.4 percent of its field goal tries for the game. The Spartans were cold from the floor from the opening tip making seven field goals in the first 20 minutes on 23.3 percent. San Jose State trailed, 44-20, at the intermission as Indiana State had its best first-half of shooting for the season making 76.0 percent of its shots.
The Sycamores (4-1) made it four wins in a row without their leading scorer, junior guard Jordan Barnes, who was subject to concussion protocol. A preseason first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference pick, Barnes averaged 20.3 points a game in Indiana State's first four games.
Guard Clayton Hughes led Indiana State in scoring with a career-high 23 points. Tyreke Key added 17 for the Sycamores, who finished the game shooting 64.2 percent for the game.
Indiana State, which led by as many as 34 points in the second half, was ahead the entire game. The Sycamores also outrebounded San Jose State, 39-23.
San Jose State returns to action, Thursday, December 6, hosting Bethune Cookman, in a 7:00 p.m. game at The Event Center.
