San Jose, Calif. – SJSU women's basketball dropped its 2018-19 season opener 73-66 to San Francisco State Tuesday at the Event Center.
The Spartans (0-1) finished the game 21-for-66 from the floor (31.3 percent). Cydni Lewis had a team-high 14 points and Danae Marquez added 11 points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting. Sophomore guard Courtesy Clark poured on a career-best eight points.
SJSU had their chances and narrowed the gap to two points at 65-63 with 2:28 to play in the fourth quarter after Fiema'a Hafoka buried a three-pointer from the right corner. San Francisco State then gained control in the final 28 seconds and made four free throws to end the contest.
San Francisco State was led by Taimane Les-Hardee who led all scorers with 20 points while Jhaina Stephens (15), Amani Alexander (11) and Danielle Palmer (11) all finished with double digits. The Gators finished the game shooting 37.1 percent (26-of-70).
The Spartans shot 30.6 percent from behind the arc while San Francisco State finished 5-for-19 (26.3 percent).
SJSU returns to action on Friday when they play the San Francisco Dons. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in War Memorial Gym.
