Spartans Lose 52-49 In Conference Home Opener

San Jose, Calif. – The San Jose State women's basketball team trailed by as many as nine points in the third quarter, before storming back to tie the game midway in the fourth, but couldn't forge a lead and lost 52-49 to the Nevada Wolf Pack on Wednesday night in The Event Center.

The loss drops the Spartans to 1-12 on the year, 0-2 in Mountain West action.  Nevada improves to 5-9, 1-2 in the conference play.

Junior Fieme'a Hafoka led the Spartans with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Trailing 52-49 with 11 seconds left, Hafoka blocked a shot by Nevada's Da'Ja Hamilton, which could have put the game away.  Hafoka grabbed the rebound, called time out and gave the Spartans a chance to tie the game with a three.

SJSU advanced the ball to the frontcourt and Hafoka got a good look with two seconds left, but it caromed off the backboard and rim as time expired.

Trailing 42-38 after three, Megan Anderson hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game 44-44 with 5:33 to play.  The two threes gives her 68 for her career and moves her into the 17th place by herself on the program's all-time three-point list.  She is two shy of Megan Gluhan (1997-00) who made 70 in her career.

Cydni Lewis had eight points, including a pair of threes and Mikaylah Wilson added eight points, two rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

For the game SJSU outshot Nevada from the floor, 37 percent (20-of-54) to 32.2 percent (19-of-59).  One of the differences in the game came at the free throw line.  Nevada went to the line 14 times, making 10 while the Spartans made 3-of-7 attempts. The other was on the boards.  Nevada outrebounded San Jose State 45-to-29, including 21-to-8 on the offensive glass.  They used that to forge a 17-to-6 advantage in second chance points.

Jade Redmon, who led all scorers with 18 points, paced Nevada's offense.  Tarae Briggs had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Spartans next game is Saturday, January 12 at Boise State.  The Spartans and Broncos are scheduled to tip off in Taco Bell Arena at 1:00 p.m. (PT).
