This Week In Spartan Athletics - Jan. 21-27

Each Monday check out This Week in San José State Athletics to catch up on last week's action and see what's ahead for the Spartans!

Women's Gymnastics
This Week: San José State opens the home portion of the 2019 schedule this Friday as Air Force, Alaska Anchorage and Seattle Pacific come to The Event Center.
 
Last Week: The Spartans scored a 193.225 to win a dual meet at Southeast Missouri last Friday night. The floor team had a season-best 48.825.
 
Spartan Fact: Taylor Chan won the first bars title of her collegiate career Friday night with a career-best 9.825. She also tied for first on floor with a 9.900 and won the all-around with a 39.150.
 
Spartan Fact #2: Freshman Carli Orcutt recorded season-bests of 9.750 on bars and 9.700 on vault. She made her collegiate debut on floor with a 9.725 and helped the floor team to a season-high 48.825.

Men's Basketball (3-14, 0-5)
This Week: The Spartans are at Wyoming Wednesday night before returning to The Event Center this Saturday for a game with Air Force at 6 p.m.

Last Week: San José State lost to 81-63 last Wednesday night and at UNLV 94-56 Saturday afternoon.

Spartan Fact: Noah Baumann tied a single-game school record with seven three-point baskets made against Utah State last week. He is third Spartan to make seven threes in game, following Adrian Oliver in 2010 and James Kinney in 2011.

Women's Basketball (1-15, 0-5)
This Week: The Spartans host Wyoming Wednesday night before traveling to the United States Air Force Academy to face the Falcons Saturday afternoon.

Last Week: San José State dropped a pair of Mountain West games, losing 82-49 at Utah State and 53-43 at home to UNLV.

Spartan Fact: Offensively the Spartans are not shy when it comes to long distance shooting.  Nationally, SJSU ranks 31st in three-point attempts, 53rd in three-pointers made, 36th in three-pointers per game and is third the Mountain West at 8.3 threes per game.

Women's Swimming & Diving
This Week: The Spartans travel to UC Davis this Friday for a dual meet with the Aggies.

Last Week: San José State won at Cal State East Bay, 176-86, last Friday. Gabby Heng, Chloe Limargo and Gabriela Vieira each won two individual races.

Spartan Fact: The Spartans are on a four-meet winning streak.

Women's Tennis
This Week: The Spartans return to action this week with two dual homes matches this week - Friday vs. Sonoma State and Sunday vs. Cal Poly.

Last Time: The Spartans played in fall tournaments last semester, the last being the CSUN Fall Invitational.

Spartan Fact: Miyo Kobayashi starts the dual match season tied with former teammate Julianna Bacelar for fifth place on the career wins list with 131. Two wins will move her into third alone trailing only Marie Klocker (142) and Gaelle Rey (139).

Football
This Week: Senior Josh Oliver will be participating in the 2019 Reese's Senior Bowl this Saturday, January 26 at 1:30 p.m CT/11:30 a.m. PT. The game will be shown live on the NFL Network.

Spartan Fact: Oliver will wear his #89 jersey and will play for the South team coached by the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff.

Indoor Track & Field
This Week: The Spartans continue training for their next indoor competitions - Bronco Challenge on February 9 and the Mountain West Championships February 21-23.

Last Week: The men's team returned to action after a 31-year hiatus. The teams competed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational indoor track and field meet in Albuquerque.

Spartan Fact (men): Sophomore Jacari Bearden, a second-generation Spartan track and field team member, and freshman Richard Dang, were the first two San José State competitors competing in the long jump. Bearden's dad, Jerome Bearden was a hurdler on the 1979 through 1981 Spartan track and field teams. Jacari became the first San José State men's track and field athlete to post a mark and went on to finish ninth in the long jump with a 19-feet-8.25 leap.

Spartan Fact (women): Junior Silvia Gutierrez became the first female Spartan to throw the weight throw in competition. She placed 12th with a throw of 49-feet-11.75.

Women's Water Polo (1-0)
This Week: San José State travels to the Cal Cup in Berkeley to face Long Beach State and Stanford on Sunday.

Last Week: The Spartans opened the 2019 season with a 12-9 win over #10 UC Davis.

Spartan Fact: Newcomers figured prominently starting with Olga Descalzi from Spain who scored twice and had three of her four steals in the fourth quarter as the Spartans overcame an 8-7 third-quarter deficit.
