San Jose, Calif. – Three Spartans scored in double figures led by Cydni Lewis' 16 points, but the San José State women's basketball team fell to the Wyoming Cowgirls 70-56 on Wednesday night in The Event Center.
In addition to Lewis offensive output she grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Raziya Potter scored 12 points, had four boards, two assists and a steal and blocked shot. Junior Fieme'a Hafoka added 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Wyoming jumped out to a 22-10 lead after one quarter, but in the second the Spartans offense started to get going.
San José State (1-16, 0-6 MW) opened the second period on a 10-0 run. Lewis had eight points in the spurt, scoring them on three successive possessions to get SJSU to within a bucket at 22-20 with 6:54 to go before halftime.
The teams traded hoops for the rest of the period and after a Lewis free throw the Spartans were within a point at 29-28 with 46 seconds to play. Wyoming (10-5, 3-3 MW) finished the period outscoring the Spartans 4-1 and took a 33-29 lead into the half.
The game was essentially decided in the first four minutes of the third period. Wyoming opened the quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 12-point lead.
Trailing by 14 points, 47-33 with 4:10 to go in the third, SJSU made a push. They scored nine straight led by Analyss Benally, who had five of her six points in the game in the run, and was capped by a three-pointer by Benally which got the Spartans to within five at 47-42.
Wyoming responded, outscored SJSU 9-to-2 in the final two minutes of the period, and was never threatened in the last quarter on the way to the 14-point victory.
Marta Gomez led the Cowgirls and all players with 20 points. Bailee Cotton had 11 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Spartans next game is scheduled for Saturday, January 26 at Air Force. The Falcons and Spartans are scheduled to tip at 1:00 p.m. (MT) in Clune Arena.
