Women's Gymnastics Hosts MPSF Foes Friday Night

The San José State women's gymnastics team competes at home for the first time this season Friday night. The Spartans welcome three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foes to The Event Center - Air Force, Alaska Anchorage and Seattle Pacific for a meet that begins at 7 p.m. This meet has been declared as Dads & Daughters meet and club team night.

The Spartans won a dual meet last Friday at Southeast Missouri, 193.225-189.800. Taylor Chan won the bars title with a career-best 9.825, tied for first on floor at 9.900 and claimed the all-around crown with a 39.150.

SPARTAN COACHING STAFF
Head coach Joanne Bowers begins her first season at the helm of the San José State program. She is the sixth head coach in the program's now 50-year history in August of 2018.  From 2007 to 2016, Bowers was the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Washington.

James Williams and Jeffrey Langenstein are in their first season as assistant coaches for the Spartans after joining the program in September of 2018. Chelsea Spomer is in her second year with the program, serving as the director of operations for the 2019 season.

MPSF WEEKLY HONORS
Each of the past three weeks, a Spartan gymnast has won an MPSF honor. This week, Carli Orcutt was named the MPSF Freshman of the Week. Orcutt, from Tucson, Ariz., recorded her best meet as a Spartan and helped the team to a 193.225-189.800 win at Southeast Missouri. She started the night with a season-best 9.750 on bars and followed that up with a season-best 9.700 on vault. She then made her debut on floor in the third rotation with a 9.725. For the meet, she was third on bars, tied for fourth on vault and tied for sixth on floor.

Taylor Chan has received the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week honors twice this year. At Boise State on January 13, Chan tied her career-best score in the all-around with a 39.175. Chan led the team on the bars with a 9.800, the beam with a 9.825 (season best) and the floor with a 9.800. She tied for second in the all-around, tied for third on floor and tied for fourth on beam.

At the NorCal Classic on January 6, Chan finished second in the all-around at the NorCal Classic with a 39.025 Sunday afternoon. She was second to Stanford's Kyla Bryant who won every event and the all-around. Chan tied for first on floor with Bryant with a 9.900, and added a 9.800 on beam, 9.700 on vault and 9.625 on bars. Her 39.025 in the all-around was  her fifth 39.000+ score in the all-around during her Spartan career.

SPARTANS WITH FLOOR BEST AT SEMO
The Spartan floor team recorded a season-best 48.825 in the win at Southeast Missouri on January 18. Taylor Chan led the team as she tied first with a 9.90. Freshman Jasmine Henley had a season-best 9.8000, while fellow freshman Carli Orcutt recorded a 9.725 in her first collegiate floor routine. Josalyn Ray and Stephanie Relova each had a 9.700, and Chelsey Andrada had a 9.675.

CHAN TIES FOR FLOOR TITLE AT NORCAL CLASSIC
Taylor Chan
started the 2019 season by tying for first on the floor with a 9.900 at the NorCal Classic. She tied with Kyla Bryant of Stanford for the first event title of the season.

ALUMNI MEET - FEBRUARY 1
San José State hosts UC Davis and Boise State on Friday, February 1, at the Event Center beginning at 7 p.m. This meet is designated as the Spartan Alumni Meet.
