Spartans Win Season Opener, 6-1, Over Sonoma State

San Jose, Calif.----- San Jose State University started the 2019 women's tennis dual match season with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Sonoma State at the Spartan Tennis Complex.

The Spartans (1-0) won all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead in the team scoring.

"Being the first match, we don't know where everyone is at. We came out with a good start in doubles today. That was the key. Sonoma State is a good (NCAA Division II) team. As you can see from the singles results, there weren't a lot of easy sets. We had to fight a lot to get those victories," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka.

San Jose State won five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets for the team triumph. In the process, senior Miyo Kobayashi moved into third place on the Spartans' list for career women's tennis victories with 134. Kobayashi teamed with freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo for a 6-0 doubles win at #2 doubles and topped Sonoma State's Calrisa Colling, 6-2, 6-4 in singles for a pair of victories.

Kobayashi only trails former teammates Marie Klocker (141) and Gaelle Rey (139) on the San Jose State career wins list.

Pedrero Galindo at #1 singles, Savannah Sendar at #3 singles, Klara Milojkovic at #5 singles, and Mathilda Vidgren at #6 singles were winners in both singles and doubles for the Spartans.

San Jose State closes out its first weekend of dual match action Sunday, January 27, hosting Cal Poly, in a 12:00 p.m. non-conference contest at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
