Spartans Stay Unbeaten - Outlast Cal Poly, 5-2

San Jose, Calif.----- San Jose State University completed a successful opening weekend of women's dual match tennis with a 5-2 non-conference victory over Cal Poly.

The Spartans (2-0) clinched the team victory when freshman Klara Milojkovic overcame a one-set deficit for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Caroline Williams at #5-singles. Milokjkovic picked up her first two singles wins of the year in the opening weekend of dual match action after going winless during the fall tournament season.

San Jose State also got straight set wins from Laura Malsert at #4 and Mathilda Vidgren at #6 singles after Cal Poly's Emily Louie–Meadors tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alba Pedrero Galindo at #1 singles. Savannah Sendar of the Spartans picked a three-set win over Grace Olyphant at #3 singles, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3) after San Jose State claimed the team victory.

"There was a very close doubles point that could have been decided either way. We came up on the winning side. Most importantly, I was happy for the #3-doubles team, Mathilda and Klara had a really rough doubles. They came out and showed their confidence in singles and turned it around," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka, whose team opened the season with a 6-1 win over Sonoma State.

"It was great for Klara to get the win and clinch the match in the third set (for us) after (losing) the first set. I could go down the line. Savannah grinded out a (singles) win. It was a good team victory."

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead into the six singles matches winning two of three doubles contests. The doubles point on the scoreboard came down to a tiebreaker triumph by Pedrero Galindo and her partner Miyo Kobayashi at #2 doubles, 7-6 with a 9-7 tiebreaker over Caroline Williams and MacKenzie Worsnop of Cal Poly (0-2).

San Jose State is on the road for the first time in dual match action, February 2 at UC Riverside and February 3 at CSUN. Both non-conference matches begin at noon.
