Fresno, Calif. – The San Jose State women's basketball team got off to a good start, but couldn't sustain its momentum and lost to the Fresno State Bulldogs 77-48 in each team's Mountain West Conference opener.
The Spartans jumped out to a 9-2 lead by the first media time out, which came at 4:31. The Spartans were 4-of-8 from the field and looking good, but from that point on it was all the Bulldogs.
Fresno State was just 1-of-8 at the first media timeout. But over the next 14 minutes they recovered going 14-of-22 from the floor, including hitting four three-pointers and sinking 10-of-11 from the free throw line. By halftime the Spartans were down 44-24.
Fresno State (8-4, 1-0 MW) maintained its 20-point lead through out the second half, led by 28 twice in the fourth quarter before taking the 29-point, 77-48 victory.
Cydni Lewis, who had 11 points and a team-high five rebounds, led the Spartans offense. Megan Anderson had eight points including a pair of three-pointers which move her into a tie for 17th place on the program's career three-point list. She is equal with Hallie Gennett (2016-18) with 66 career-threes.
For the game, SJSU shot just 28 percent (17-of-60), including 21 percent from distance (5-of-24). Fresno State went 28-of-67 (42 percent) and knocked down six three pointers.
San Jose State (1-11, 0-1 MW) was outrebounded 52-to-30 and lost the second-chance points 19-to-6.
The Bulldogs had five players in double figures. Bree Delaney and Candice White had 15 points each and Maddi Utti had a 10 point, 10 rebound double double.
The Spartans next game is scheduled for January 9 at 7:00 p.m. in The Event Center. San José State hosts Nevada in its conference home opener.
