Marquez Leads Spartans To 68-59 Win To End 14-Game Slide

San Jose, Calif. – The San Jose State women's basketball team ended its longest losing streak since a 17-game slide in the 2010-11 season with a 68-59 victory against the Utah State Aggies on Wednesday night in The Event Center.  The win snapped a 14-game slide dating back to November 29, 2018.
 
A career-high 21 points from sophomore Danae Marquez powered the Spartans.  In addition to being the games leading scorer, Marquez had five assists, two steals and two rebounds.  Freshman Raziya Potter finished with 16 points, one off her career-high, six rebounds and three assists.


 
The game was close through the first three quarters, but SJSU took a 51-50 lead with 5:04 to play in the fourth on a pair of Analyss Benally free throws.  From there the Spartans never looked back.
 
Potter scored the next four points on drives down the lane, which the Aggies could not stop.  After a bucket from Utah State made it 55-52, Marquez knocked down a three and Mikaylah Wilson hit one-of-two free throws to give the Spartans a 59-52 lead with 2:05 to play.
 
Potter then hit a pair of free throws to push the advantage to nine points 61-52 with 1:29 to go.
 
Down the stretch, the Aggies were forced to foul, but they chose the wrong Spartan to commit them against, Marquez.  She made 6-of-6 in the final minute and is now 21-of-21 for the year.


 
For the game, San Jose State (2-17, 1-7 MW), which is being outrebounded by an average of 16.5 boards a game, beat the Aggies (10-9, 5-3 MW) 45-to-40 on the glass.  It is the first time this season SJSU has outrebounded an opponent.
 
The Spartans were better from the floor, shooting 40.7 percent (24-of-59) compared to 33.3 percent (24-of-72) for Utah State, as well as from three points range (25 percent to 23 percent).
 
The Aggies had three player in double figures led by Shannon Dufficy's 13 points and 13 rebounds.
 
The Spartans look to keep the momentum going in its next game is at the San Diego State Aztecs.  The teams tip off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in Viejas Arena.
