Waikoloa, Hawaii----- San Jose State University had a rough third and final round at the 28th annual Amer Ari Invitational and finished 14th out of 18 teams.
After posting under par team scores the first two rounds, the Spartans had a final round team score of 303 for an 868 total for 54 holes on the par 72, 7,704 Waikoloa Kings Course. The Spartans' best individual score in the five-player, score-four format was Bryce Wortman's three-over par 75. Kevin Velo, Sean Yu and Matt Heitel's 76 counted to the team score for the day.
"We need to be more disciplined and mature to play and beat the 'big boys.' We were trying too hard. It's as simple as that," said San Jose State men's golf head coach John Kennaday, whose team started the final round in tenth place, four shots out of seventh place. In a field that featured five teams ranked in GolfStat's top-20, the Spartans came into their first spring season tournament ranked #55 in the GolfStat rankings.
The one bright spot on the final day for San Jose State was freshman Parker Sisk playing as one of the 19 individual entries. After a pair of 75's, his even par 72 was his best of the tournament and matched the third best final round score among the individuals.
Oklahoma State, the nation's #1-team according to GolfStat, completed a wire-to-wire victory. The Cowboys finished with an 817 total, 10 strokes better than #16-Aburn, second at 827. #14-Texas was third at 829.
Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State was the individual winner with a final round 65 for a 198. He finished three strokes ahead of Oregon's Edwin Yi and teammate and first-round leader Zach Bauchou, who tied for second at 201.
Yu, who began the final round tied for 12th, was the top San Jose State finisher tying for 37th place at two-under par 214. Wortman also was under par for 54 holes at one-under 215 and tied for 42nd.
The Spartans return to action, Monday, February 25, for the two-day, 54-hole Southwestern Intercollegiate in Westlake Village, Calif.
