Spartans Stay Unbeaten With 4-3 Comeback Win At Santa Clara

Santa Clara, Calif.----- San Jose State University's Miyo Kobayashi battled back from a one-set deficit to post a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Santa Clara University's Katya Tabachnik and give the Spartans a 4-3 team victory over the Broncos in a non-conference women's tennis match.

Kobayashi's singles victory as did all six singles matches occurred over two days due to wet grounds at the DeGheri Tennis Center on the Santa Clara campus. The Spartan senior was the only San Jose State player involved in a three-set singles match.  The win was her 136th of her college career, three shy of matching second-place Gaelle Rey on the Spartans' career list for singles and doubles victories.

"My hat's off to Miyo, our only senior, who has been in this situation. It's the last match on in singles and it comes down to her. She battled, won the key points when needed and was successful at the end," said San Jose State head coach women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka. "In the end, we can always count on her."

The Spartans (3-0) battled back from a 1-0 deficit after losing the doubles point when the match started on February 9. San Jose State is 3-0 on a season for the first time since 2016 when the Spartans won their first four matches.

"It's the second year in a row it's been 4-3 (the score). It's been back and forth with Santa Clara the last two years, so it was good to come out on the winning side," the Spartans' head coach said.

San Jose State also trailed Santa Clara (1-2), 3-1, before Klara Milojkovic at #6-singles and Laura Malsert at #5-singles won their matches in straight sets leaving Kobayashi and Tabachnik at #3-singles as the deciding match.

San Jose State returns to action, Friday, February 15, hosting University of San Francisco in a 12:00 p.m. non-conference dual match.
