Saratoga, Calif.----- The People's Republic of China national women's water polo team led from start to finish posting a 20-5 exhibition win over San Jose State at the West Valley College Aquatic Center.
Five Spartans found the cage for scores after China jumped out to a 6-0 first quarter lead. Sierra Painter, Matilda Moore, Tyanna Supreme, Olga Descalzi Portell and Riley Agerbeek scored for the Spartans in their first action since January 27.
Painter and Descalzi Portell scored on 6-on-5 power plays. The Spartans were 2-of-11 on the power play.
Sophia Reyes played the entire match in goal for San Jose State. She was credited with eight saves.
China had several players from its 2016 Olympic Games team in the water against the Spartans. The Chinese team was seventh at the 2016 Olympics and won the 2018 Asian Games over Kazakstan.
San Jose State, with a 2-1 win-loss record and ranked tied for 12th in the February 13 Collegiate Water Polo Association weekly national coaches poll, continues its longest break in the season until it plays its next countable contest on Friday, February 22, in the opening round of the 16-team Barbara Kalbus Invitational hosted by UC Irvine. The Spartans will play four matches over three days.
