Spartans Sixth After 1st Day Of Indoor Track & Field Championships

Albuquerque, N.M.----- For the first time in its history, San Jose State University competed in a conference indoor men's track and field championship with its distance medley relay team finishing seventh at the 2019 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Reinstated last fall after a 30-year hiatus from the sport, the Spartans competed at NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and finished as high as third in 1969, but not in a conference indoor championship meet as a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association or the Big West Conference.

The foursome of freshmen Luis Chavez, Peter Handy and Jeffrey Page and junior Edgar Bonilla finished the distance medley relay with a 10:19.26 time for seventh place. Boise State won the race with a 9:51.89 clocking.

Even though the Spartans finished seventh in the race, San Jose State is sixth in the team scoring after one event. Third-place finisher Air Force was not awarded any points for its finish in the race.

The three-day championship continues on February 22 and concludes on February 23. San Jose State has entries in 60, 200 and 400-meter dashes; long jump; and 800, mile and 500-meter runs on the second day of the Mountain West Championship.

Live streaming is available through FloTrack.
