Santa Barbara, Calif.----- Miyo Kobayashi and Alba Pedrero Galindo were winners in singles for the San Jose State University women's tennis team in a 5-2 non-conference loss to UC Santa Barbara.
Pedrero Galindo completed a 3-0 sweep in singles action over the last five days coming back from a set down to defeat Stephanie Yamada of UC Santa Barbara, 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 with a 10-7 tiebreaker at #4-singles. She now is 14-8 in singles in her first year at the major college level.
Kobayashi was a straight-set winner at #2 singles with scores of 6-3 and 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker over Tiffany Lagarde.
The loss for San Jose State (4-2) was its second in as many days. For the second day in a row, the Spartans were unable to notch a victory in doubles and started the six singles against the host Gauchos (4-2) trailing, 1-0. Kobayashi was the only San Jose State singles player to win a first set in singles.
"Compared to yesterday (vs. #26-Washington), we got of to a slow start in doubles and singles. We're better than that and we need to execute better. No excuses," said San Jose State women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
"Miyo and Alba did a great job staying focused at the end to win their matches."
San Jose State is next in dual match action, Saturday, March 2, at Sacramento State. First serve is at noon.
