Spartans Down CSU Bakersfield 6-0; Sweep Silicon Valley Classic

San Jose, Calif. – The San José State softball team finished the inaugural Silicon Valley Classic I with a 6-0 victory over the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon finishing the event with a 4-0 record.

Freshman Jenessa Ullegue pitched her second complete game of the tournament and fourth of the season to earn the win and improve her record to 3-1.  On Sunday, she gave up four hits and struck out five with two walks in the shutout victory.

Ullegue was in control for nearly the entire game allowing just two runners to get into scoring position.

In the third, she gave up a lead off triple, but then got back-to-back strikeouts and a popup to shortstop Mackenzie Drake to end the threat.  In the fifth, the Roadrunners had a runner on second with two outs.  But when she wandered a bit to far from the base catcher Grace Garvey threw behind her to second baseman Cassidy Clark.  Clark then fired the ball to third where Rayohna Sagapolu applied the tag to the sliding runner to get the third out.

For the weekend, Ullegue was 2-0 and pitched a pair of shutout victories.  In 14 innings, she allowed seven hits while striking out nine.

The San José State (9-5) bats got seven hits with the first four coming a three-run third inning.

Garvey (1-for-3, R) led off with a single and was followed by Drake who rapped a double down the right field line.  After a Makayla Englestad (1-for-4, R, 2RBI, 3B) groundout scored Garvey from third to make it 1-0, Arianna Miranda (1-for-3, R, 2RBI, SF) singled in Drake to make it 2-0.  Two batters later Madison Aurin (2-for-4, RBI) singled in Miranda for a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, San José state added another run.  With the bases loaded and two outs, pinch hitter Carley Morfey worked the Roadrunners' pitcher for a walk to push the fourth run of the game across.

The Spartans final two runs came in the sixth.  After Drake (1-for-2, 2R, 2B) walked to open the inning, Englestad belted a shot to left center and the speedy outfielder was off to the races.  Drake came all the way around to score and when the dust had settled, Engelstad had her second triple in as many days.

Miranda then hit a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield and Englestad strolled home for the sixth and final run of the game.

Ullegue set CSU Bakersfield (5-7) down in order in the seventh to secure the Spartans fourth win of the weekend.
