Newport Beach, Calif. ----- Team captain Sierra Painter scored a single-match career high four goals and goalkeeper Hannah Henry stopped 16 shots, but that was not enough for San Jose State University in an 8-7 three-overtime, sudden-victory loss to Long Beach State in the Spartans' final match of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
Painter scored twice in the fourth quarter, first to give #13-ranked San Jose State (3-4) its third and last one-goal lead of the match, 5-4, and then added a power-play score with 3:40 remaining in regulation time to tie the score at 6-6.
Long Beach State (4-8), which lost to the Spartans, 15-8, at the Cal Cup a month ago, scored three of its goals on power plays, two of them in the extra periods, and two more on 5-meter penalty shots in the second quarter. Sarah Barker's power-play goal at 2:11 of the third overtime sent the Spartans to the pool deck with a 1-3 record for the weekend and 14th place in the 16-team tournament.
Henry did her best to keep her team in the match. She came up with her third consecutive match with 10 or more saves and finished the four matches with 42 saves. Henry had a season-high 18 saves less than 24 hours earlier in the team's 10-9 overtime win against #25-San Diego State.
Olga Descalzi Portell and Caroline Kerwin accounted for San Jose State's remaining three goals in the match. Descalzi Portell's shot with 0:05 to go in the second overtime went past Long Beach State goalkeeper Erin Patras, who finished with 15 saves, to force the third and deciding overtime period. Descalzi Portell remains the only Spartan to score in every match this season and leads the team in scoring with 15 goals.
San Jose State's next match is Saturday, March 2, at Santa Clara in a non-conference contest starting at Noon.
