Spartans Play In The San Diego Classic This Weekend

San Jose, Calif. – Coming off a weekend at home and a four-game sweep of the inaugural Silicon Valley Classic I, the San José State softball team travels out of town for the last time during the non-conference portion of its schedule.  The Spartans will compete in the San Diego Classic I, co-hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego.
 
San José State plays five games over three days, March 1-3.  They will spend Friday and Saturday at San Diego State playing BYU, Long Beach State, Florida Gulf Coast and Weber State and on Sunday will be at USD to take on the Torreros.

Quick Look At The Spartans
San José State found itself 5-5 after the first two weekends of the year, but went 4-0 in the inaugural Silicon Valley Classic I, and takes a 9-5 record into this weekends play.
 
Sophomore Rayohna Sagapolu leads the team with a .391 average (9-for-23).  She has scored six times and has one of the teams three triples.  Freshman Arianna Miranda is providing the power.  She has one homer and a pair of doubles and has driven in a team-high 10 runs.  Makayla Englestad lead the squad with 15 hits, including four doubles and a pair of triples, has scored 12 times, and has driven in six. As a team, the Spartans are hitting .248, are 2-for-2 in stolen bases and are fielding at a .950 pace.
 
In the circle, the Spartans have a team ERA of 3.33 with sophomore Caroline Bowman and freshman Jenessa Ullegue appearing in a team-high seven games.  In 33.0 innings, Ullegue has posted a 3-1 record with two saves, has struck out 23, walked nine and opposing batters are hitting .198 off her.  Bowman is 4-2 with a 3.35 ERA.  In 31.1 innings she has 23 strikeouts, has walked just four and batters are hitting .289 off her.

BYU Cougars (6-7)
BYU spent the first weekend of the season at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, going 1-4, but they defeated #18 Baylor while there.  Two weeks ago they went 3-1 at the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classis (hosted by UNLV).  Last weekend they were 2-3 in Cathedral City, Calif., at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
 
As a team, BYU is batting .259 through its first 13 games.  Hitting .429 in 11 games, Rylee Jensen has the team's highest batting average, and leads the team with 15 hits, three doubles, four homers and 12 RBIs.  The Cougars are 5-for-7 in stolen base attempts and have a fielding percentage of .976.
 
In the circle, BYU has a team ERA of 4.59 with Autumn Moffat posting a 3-3 record and a 2.73 ERA in four starts.  She has tossed 29.2 innings, struck out 29 while walking 16, and batters are hitting .221 off her.

Long Beach State (6-8)
Long Beach State spent the first weekend of the season at the Easton Desert Classic (hosted by UNLV), going 3-2.  Two weeks ago they hosted the Stacy Winsberg Invitational and went 2-3.  Last weekend they were 1-3 in Cathedral City, Calif., at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
 
As a team, Long Beach State is batting .295 through its first 14 games.  Hitting .350 in 14 games, Sydney McCollum has the team's highest batting average.  The power comes from Jamie Wren, who has 20 RBIs, has scored 12 times and has belted four homers and rapped out 4 doubles.  The Beach is 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts and have a fielding percentage of .949.
 
In the circle, LBSU has a team ERA of 4.02 with Kellie White posting a 2-3 record and a 4.45 ERA in six starts and eight total appearances.  She has tossed 33.0 innings, struck out 29 while walking 16, and batters are hitting .319 off her.
 
This will be the 58th meeting between these two programs.  Long Beach Stat leads the all-time series 31-26 and in neutral site games, the Spartans are 7-5 against LBSU.
 
Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (7-5)
Florida Gulf Coast spent the first weekend hosting its own FGCU Kickoff Classic and going 4-2.  It hosted the FGCU Invitational two weeks ago and posted a 1-2 record.  Last weekend they were 2-1 in Boca Raton, Fla., at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament.
 
As a team, FGCU is batting .251 through its first 14 games.  Hitting .360 in 14 games, Sammi Poehlman has the team's highest batting average and has score four times.  The power comes from Reedy Davenport, who has six RBIs.  The Eagles are 11-for-14 in stolen base attempts and have a fielding percentage of .971.
 
In the circle, Florida Gulf Coast has a team ERA of 1.18 with Riley Randolph posting a 5-2 record and a 0.15 ERA in seven starts and six complete games.  She has tossed 47.0 innings, struck out 61 while walking just eight, and batters are hitting .167 off her.

Weber State Wildcats (3-7)
Weber State spent the first weekend at the Kajikawa Classic (hosted by Arizona State) and going 2-3.  Two weeks ago they competed in the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classis (hosted by UNLV) and posted a 1-4 record.  Last weekend they did not compete.
 
As a team, Weber State is batting .300 through its first 10 games.  Hitting .500 in 10 games, Landy Hawker has the team's highest batting average and has scored a team-best six times.  The power comes from Chloe Camarero, who has eight RBIs and four doubles.  The Wildcats are 7-for-9 in stolen base attempts and have a fielding percentage of .955.

San Diego spent the first weekend hosting its own USD Tournament and going 2-4.  Two weeks ago they competed in the Littlewood Classic (hosted by Arizona State) and posted a 0-5 record.  Last weekend they played a three-game series against Southern Utah and swept the Falcons.
 
As a team, the Torreros are batting .304 through its first 14 games.  Hitting .412 in 14 games, Sara Silveyra has the team's highest batting average, has four doubles and has driven in seven runs. Two players share the team lead with eight RBIs.  The Wildcats are 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts and have a fielding percentage of .945.
