Westlake Village, Calif.----- Kevin Velo's final round three-under 69 propelled San Jose State University to a sixth-place finish at the 12-team Southwestern Invitational men's golf tournament.
Velo's 69 was his second of the 54-hole tournament on the par 72, 6,992-yard North Ranch Country Club course. He opened the Southwestern Invitational with a bogey-free 18 holes in round one. His third-round 69 consisted of five birdies and two bogeys.
Besides Velo, the Spartans counted a roller-coaster one-under par 71 from Sean Yu, Bryce Wortman's second consecutive 73 and Ben Campbell's 76. Nate Jetter's 80 did not count in the team scoring.
Yu's round ranged from four-under after six holes to three over with four holes to go. He finished going eagle-birdie-birdie-par for his 71, his low round of the tournament.
The Spartans finished the tournament with an 878 total for sixth place, only one shot behind fifth-place and #22-ranked Tennessee, according to GolfStat.
Velo also was San Jose State's top finisher in the tournament with his 213 total for a five-way tie for fourth place in the 66-golfer field. Velo's finish was a season best and his third top-10 placing this season.
Yu and Campbell were in a 10-way tie for 20th place at 221. For Campbell, it was his second top-20 finish of the season, while Yu picked up his fifth top-20 tournament placing in 2018-19.
Justin Suh of USC was the medalist with a 204 total. He posted identical scores of 68 in each of the three rounds.
