Albuquerque, NM – Megan Anderson scored a career-high 22 points including six three-pointers for the San José State women's basketball team, but the New Mexico Lobos were too much to handle in a 110-72 loss.
With her six threes, Anderson has 97 for her career and moves into 12th place on the program's all-time list, passing Sarah Plavljanin (2010-12) who sank 96 in her time as a Spartan. For the game, Anderson was 8-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-8 from beyond the three-point line. She grabbed three rebounds and had two assists.
Cydni Lewis provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and five rebounds. She was 4-of-7 from the field, 1-of-2 from distance and knocked down 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Analyss Benally added nine points and Mikaylah Wilson and Danae Marquez each scored eight. Marquez also dished out a career-high nine assists.
San José State (4-22, 3-12 MW) led just once in the game, 7-6 with 6:57 to go in the first quarter, on Anderson's first three of the game, but from there the Lobos finished the period on a 15-5 run and had a nine-point advantage after 10 minutes, 21-12.
For the rest of the game, New Mexico (22-4, 12-3 MW) methodically pulled away. They shot 62.5 percent in the second quarter, making 10-of-16 shots, including 5-of-10 from three-point range and led 48-29 at the half.
The teams traded buckets for the first four minutes of the third period, but at the 5:49 mark UNM pushed the lead to 22, 60-38. By the end of the period they were up 77-49. In the fourth, they outscored the Spartans 33-23 and cruised to the 110-72 victory.
For the game, the Lobos shot 50 percent (40-of-79) from the floor, and hit 11 threes. The Spartans were 25-of-66 on the night, 38 percent, and sank 11 threes. San Jose State was outscored 48-to-28 in the paint, where the Lobos size advantage was glaring.
San José State returns to action on Saturday March 1, against the San Diego State Aztecs. Tip off for the game in The Event Center is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
