San José State University women's gymnast Taylor Chan and men's basketball player Noah Baumann are the Student-Athletes of the Month for January, presented by O'Connor Hospital.
Chan won seven event titles in January including two all-around titles. She helped the Spartans to a 5-4 record for the month. She won the all-around title at Southeast Missouri on January 18 and at the SJSU Quad meet on January 25. Taylor scored a career-best 39.175 in the all-around in a meet at Boise State with Air Force. Three times, she won the floor title with a 9.900. She won her first career bars title with a career-best 9.825, and added a beam title with a 9.850 at the SJSU Quad meet. She was named the MPSF Gymnast of the Week twice, January 8 and 15.
Baumann opened up Mountain West play with a bang as he averaged 11.0 points per game in the first eight games of conference play. He was the only player on the men's basketball team to start in every MW game in January. Baumann, known for his lethal 3-pointer, shot 41.3 percent from beyond the arc in January. The Phoenix, Ariz., product finished the month with back-to-back double digit scoring efforts against Air Force (12) and Utah State (15). On Jan. 16, Baumann had one of the best games of his career as he tied the school record with seven 3-pointers made and finished with a career-high 29 points, the most points scored by any Spartan this season.
