Spartans Start Amer Ari Invitational Under Par In 11th Place

Waikoloa, Hawaii----- Kevin Velo and Bryce Wortman were two of the three San Jose State University men's golfers to post an under-par round in the spring-season opening Amer Ari Invitational tournament.
 
            Velo and Wortman had rounds of two-under par 70 on the par 72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings Course. Velo had four birdies in his round while Wortman bounced back from a rough start with five birdies and no bogeys in his last eight holes. Velo and Wortman are in a group of 11 players tied for 30th place.
 
            Sean Yu, who was the Spartans' team leader in stroke average during the 2018 fall semester, had a round of three birdies and two bogeys for a 71 to give San Jose State a third under-par score. The Spartans counted Ben Campbell's 73 for 284 team score and an 11th place start in the 18-team field.
 
            Matt Heitel's 77 did not count towards the San Jose State's total of the best four scores. Freshman Parker Sisk playing as an individual signed for a 75.
 
            #1-ranked Oklahoma State is the team leader at 21-under par 267.  Texas Tech is second at 269 and Oregon is third at 271. The field features five teams in the top-20 including #2-Georgia Tech at 277, and three more teams in the top-50 in GolfStat's national team rankings.
 
            Oklahoma State's Zach Bauchou is the individual leader with a 63. Ryan Gronlund of Oregon is second at 65 in the field of 109 golfers.
 
            The 54-hole tournament continues with 18 holes on February 8 and concludes with a final 18 holes on February 9. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com
