Andrada Ties School Record, Orcutt Wins Vault For Spartans Friday Night

Sacramento, Calif.—On a rainy Friday, Chelsey Andrada tied a San José State school record, and she and Carli Orcutt each won an event title as the Spartans competed at Sacramento State Friday night. The Spartans scored a 192.500 at the meet and lost by just one-tenth of a point to the Hornets 192.600.

Andrada tied the San José State beam record with a 9.900 Friday night. She becomes the eighth Spartan to record a 9.900 on the beam and the 11th time a Spartan scored a 9.900 on beam. Andrada added a 9.775 on vault to finish in second place.

Orcutt, the reigning MPSF Freshman of the Week, won her first collegiate event title Friday as she received a season-best 9.800 on vault. She also had a 9.650 on bars and a 9.500 on floor.

The Spartans started the meet on bars with a 47.350 and were immediately behind the Hornets by 0.275. Stephanie Relova led the Spartans with a 9.750, and Carli Orcutt and Tia Gin each had a 9.650. Unfortunately, the Spartans had to count two falls as Taylor Chan and Kaprece Nadonza each had a 9.150 and Nikki Duggan rounded out the scoring with an 8.800.

San José State then had five solid scores on vault for a 48.475 team score. Orcutt led the team with a career-best 9.800. Chelsey Andrada scored a 9.775, followed by Chan and Josalyn Ray who each had a 9.750. Trisha Raquel rounded out the scoring with a 9.400. The Spartans only trailed the Hornets by .275 at the midway point of the meet, 96.100-95.825.

The Spartans took the lead in the meet with a 48.275 on floor to go ahead of the Hornets 144.100-143.950, after Sacramento State scored a 47.850 on beam. Chan led San José State with a 9.825, followed by Ray at 9.700, Antonia Marquez with a career-best 9.675, Relova at 9.575, Orcutt at 9.500 and Jasmine Henley at 8.975.

The meet came down to the final rotation where the Spartans scored a 48.400 on beam, despite having to count a fall. Andrada won the event with a school record 9.900. Chan followed with a 9.850, then Relova at 9.775, Ray at 9.675, Gabrielle De Leon at 9.200 and Henley at 9.125.

"We had a rough start on bars but kept our chins up and competed the rest of the meet," said Spartan head coach Joanne Bowers. "We are working on being able to calm our nerves better under pressure. We will continue working in practice on being more consistent so that we expect to hit in meets."

San José State returns to The Event Center next Friday, February 15, to host Sacramento State and New Hampshire. The annual Pink meet and Military Appreciation Night begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 5:45 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the Spartan Ticket Office at (408) 924-7589.
