Spartans Move Up To 10th At Amer Ari Invitational

Waikoloa, Hawaii----- San Jose State University junior Sean Yu got on a hot streak and closed out the second round of the 28th annual Amer Ari with five birdies in eight holes to lead the Spartans.
 
            Yu posted a five-under 67 on the par 72, 7,074-yard course for a 138 total and placed himself in an eight-way tie for 12th place in the 109-player field. He was even par after playing eight holes then birdied #17, #18, and #1, settled for three pars and then birdied #5 and #6 to reach five-under par.
 
            His score was one of two San Jose State scores under par in the second round. Bryce Wortman posted his second straight 70 for a 140 total and a tie for 24th place. Kevin Velo and Matt Heitel matched par 72's to give the Spartans a seven-under par 281 team score for the day. San Jose State moved up one spot from 11th to tenth and will start the final 18 holes four shots out of seventh place Georgia Tech, #2-nationally in the GolfStat rankings, at 561.
 
            "We knocked a little more rust off. We almost got it going today. It was very close to putting up an extraordinarily good number up," said San Jose State men's golf coach John Kennaday about the team's second round of the spring season.
 
            #1-ranked Oklahoma State remained the team leader and has a 540 total. Southern California is second at 545. Texas turned in the best team score of the day with a 265 and is third at 546. San Jose State's 281 was tied for seventh best of the day in the 18-team field.
 
            Texas' Cole Hammer moved into first-place in the race for medalist honors. He shot a 64 for a 131 total.
 
            The final 18 holes starts Saturday, February 9, 7:30 a.m. (HT) with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
