Davis, Calif.----- Silvia Gutierrez finished third in the hammer throw and Sarahvaughn King came home with two victories for the San Jose State University women's track and field team at the season-opening Aggie Open outdoor track and field meet.
Gutierrez posted a personal best of 164-feet in her outdoor opener at the major college level. Her previous best was 159-feet-5.
King's day started running the second leg of the Spartans' 4x100 relay. With Jayla Williams running lead off and Diamond Tabron and Daja Johnson following, San Jose State turned in a 50.14 time easily ahead of the second-place finishing UC Davis Track Club quartet.
She edged out UC Davis' Mikaela Adolphus in the 400 meters in her second race of the day. King ran 58.03 to Adolphus' 58.54. And, King concluded a full afternoon on the track posting a fourth-place time of 25.70 in the 200 meters.
"This week, we had a small squad due to some injuries. The weather was not the best, but the women were excited to get back on the track and to get back to work," said Kendra Reimer –Gonzales, San Jose State's director of track and field about the outdoor opener held during periods of rain and temperatures in the 40's.
"We are going to keep going at it and focusing on improving each and every week."
The Spartans are back in action March 15 & 16, at the Hornet Invitational hosted by Sacramento State.
