Spartans Win 4x400 Relay; Place Third In Outdoor Opener

Davis, Calif.----- In its first outdoor track and field since 1988, San Jose State University's men's team finished first in the 4x400 relay and third overall in the team scoring at the Aggie Open.

The foursome of Dominic Tanner, Aidon Jardon, Cameron Yates and Mikael Tyler can claim they are the first Spartans to come in first in an outdoor track and field competition since Demetrius Carter won the 400-meter race at the 1988 Big West Conference Championships in Logan, Utah. Tanner, Jardon, Yates and Tyler posted a winning time of 3:33.62.

Freshman Richard Dang posted the top individual finish placing third in the long jump with a mark of 21-feet-6.25. He also placed tenth in the triple jump leaping 40-feet-4.

"This was the first weekend our sprint/jump group competed together. The weather was not ideal, but they came out to compete and got a good meet under their belt," said San Jose State University director of track and field Kendra Reimer Gonzales about the opener contested in temperatures that hovered in the high 40's. "We see a lot of potential for our future meets.

Jardon was the other Spartan to post a top-five finish in the season-opening outdoor meet. Besides running the third leg of San Jose State's 4x100 relay that finished third and the winning 4x400 relay, he placed fourth in the 400 in 50.67.

The Spartans return to outdoor action next weekend at the Hornet Invitational hosted by Sacramento State, March 15 & 16.
